The Free Software Foundation (FSF), a Boston-based 501(c)(3) charity with a worldwide mission to protect freedoms critical to the computer-using public, seeks a motivated and organized tech-friendly Boston-based individual to be its full-time outreach and communication coordinator.
This newly created position, reporting to the executive director, will
work closely with our campaigns,
licensing, and
technical staff, as well as our
board of directors, to edit, publish, and promote high-quality,
effective materials both digital and printed.

These materials are a critical part of advancing the FSF's work to
support the GNU Project, free software adoption, free media formats,
and freedom on the Internet; and to oppose DRM, software patents, and
proprietary software.

Some of the position's more important responsibilities include:

stewarding the online publication and editing process for all
outreach staff; including copyediting, formatting, posting, and
maintaining material on our Web sites; and sending out e-mail
messages to our lists;

producing and improving our monthly e-mail newsletter the Free
Software Supporter;

improving the effectiveness of our audio and video materials use;

editing and building our biannual printed
Bulletin;

promoting our work and the work of others in the area of computing
freedom on social networking sites;

helping to produce fundraising materials and assisting with our
fundraising drives;

cultivating the community around the
LibrePlanet wiki and network, including
the annual conference;

working with and encouraging volunteers; and

being an approachable, humble, and friendly representative of the
FSF to our worldwide community of existing supporters and the
broader public, both in person and online.

A successful candidate will have strong editing skills, especially in
the area of copyediting, and will take pride in working with a team to
create consistently polished and effective materials.

While this is a job for a person who is passionate about technology
and its social impact, it is not a technical position. The main
technical requirement is the willingness to learn to use many new and
possibly unfamiliar pieces of software, with a positive attitude. That
being said, experience with any of the following technologies will be
considered a big plus: GNU/Linux, Plone, Drupal, CiviCRM, Ikiwiki,
Subversion, Git, CVS, Ssh, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, Emacs, LaTeX,
Inkscape, GIMP, Markdown, and MediaWiki.

Because the FSF works globally and seeks to have our materials
distributed in as many languages as possible, multilingual candidates
will have an advantage. English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch,
Mandarin, Czech, and Malagasy, are represented among current FSF staff.

With our small staff of thirteen, each person makes a clear
contribution. We work hard, but offer a humane and fun work
environment.

The FSF is a mature but growing organization that provides great
potential for advancement; existing staff get the first chance at any
new job openings. If you're hired and don't like your job title, we
might be able to change it. We're flexible like that.

Benefits and salary

The job must be worked on-site at FSF's downtown Boston offices. An
on-site interview will be required with the executive director.

This job is a union position. The salary is fixed at $49k and is
non-negotiable. Other benefits include:

full family health coverage through Blue Cross/Blue Shield's HMO
Blue program,

subsidized dental plan,

four weeks of paid vacation annually,

seventeen paid holidays annually,

public transit commuting cost reimbursement,

403(b) program through TIAA-CREF,

yearly cost-of-living pay increases, and

potential for an annual performance bonus.

Application instructions

Applications must be submitted via email to hiring@fsf.org. The
email must contain the subject line, "Outreach and Communications
Coordinator". A complete application should include:

resume,

cover letter,

writing sample (1000 words or less),

links to published work online, and

three edits you would suggest to this job posting.

All materials must be in a free format (such as plain text, PDF, or
OpenDocument, and not Microsoft Word). Email submissions that do not
follow these instructions will probably be overlooked. No phone calls,
please.

Applications must be received by 10:00am EDT on Monday, May 20th.

The FSF is an equal opportunity employer and will not discriminate
against any employee or application for employment on the basis of
race, color, marital status, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation,
national origin, handicap, or any other legally protected status
recognized by federal, state or local law. We value diversity in our
workplace.

About the Free Software Foundation

The Free Software Foundation, founded in 1985, is dedicated to
promoting computer users' right to use, study, copy, modify, and
redistribute computer programs. The FSF promotes the development and
use of free (as in freedom) software -- particularly the GNU operating
system and its GNU/Linux variants -- and free documentation for free
software. The FSF also helps to spread awareness of the ethical and
political issues of freedom in the use of software, and its Web sites,
located at fsf.org and gnu.org, are an important source of information
about GNU/Linux. Donations to support the FSF's work can be made at

The Positive Internet Company is looking for sysadmins.
Very few organizations focus entirely on GNU/Linux and Free Software, all the way from their desktop machines to complex computing clusters. Would you be interested in a rare opportunity to work for one? The Positive Internet Company has positions available for sysadmins to join a lively team providing support for a range of GNU/Linux systems.

Company Background

The Positive Internet Company has been an innovative European open-technology company since its foundation in 1998. Focusing on high-end hosting with second-to-none customer support, we own and operate our own data center near Cambridge, UK with hundreds of our own servers (almost all running Debian). Additionally, Positive maintains PoPs across major European sites.

We host and maintain a variety of systems, including HA setups and clustered solutions. Many of these are fully managed by the Positive technical team. In addition to working with some big and interesting corporations (including major financial organizations and media groups) and household names (Ricky Gervais and Stephen Fry), we host none other than the father of Free Software himself, RMS. We also actively support various community projects.

Due to demand for its services in the US, Positive expanded to New York in 2008 and now operates a wholly-owned US subsidiary company. We are based in Manhattan (at a leading communications facility) with a DR site in Tulsa, OK.

The roles

We are interested in hearing from any junior or mid-level sysadmins (or wannabe sysadmins) with a passion for GNU/Linux. These positions will involve supporting our customers (mainly by email) as well as working on infrastructure. You will join a team hand-picked not just for their technical skills but their flexible understanding of our customers' needs.

Ideally, candidates will have experience setting up and maintaining web/database/mail servers utilizing technologies such as Apache/MySQL/Postfix/Heartbeat(pacemaker)/DRBD/Xen/Perl/PHP, but we are also open to hearing from anyone who may only so far have used GNU/Linux at home as a hobbyist. Having worked with open-source virtualization would be an additional bonus.

In the first instance, successful candidates would work from home. As the company expands, the position would likely be a mix of working from home and working from our New York sites/future offices. We anticipate that normal working hours will be 11:30am-7:30pm Eastern with some negotiation on these finer points for the right candidates.

As we are recruiting at a number of levels, salaries will be commensurate with experience. Successful candidates will benefit from the support of co-workers with many years of experience, but as these positions report to managers in London, candidates must be able to work independently and thrive in a partly autonomous role.

Once fully-trained, Positive engineers participate in our 24/7 call-out rota (with generous overtime allowances). Positive gives a good vacation allowance (20 days + Federal holidays + various goodwill days around the major holidays), lots of training opportunities, funding to attend free software conferences such as OSCON, company cell phone and the chance to work with some of the best free software experts in the business. There are various opportunities for international travel and a period of training in London where you will meet your co-workers. We also offer healthcare benefits.

Get in touch

These positions should interest anyone who wants to work with GNU/Linux in a completely Windows-free zone. Successful applicants will get the benefits of working for a firmly-established European company, but also enjoy the freedom and potential usually associated with a startup. If you are interested, please send a covering email and resume to jobs at positive-internet.com.

We will hold in-person interviews for shortlisted candidates in Manhattan on November 5th and/or 6th 2012 and candidates should be available for interviews on these dates.

There may also be a possibility for part-time work prior to October.

All candidates must:

Have a solid understanding of issues surrounding secure C++ programming (at least to the level of avoiding them).

Genuinely be excited about Tor and our values.

Detailed job description:

Being a Tor Browser Hacker includes triaging, diagnosing, and fixing bugs; looking for and resolving web privacy issues; responding on short notice to security issues; and working collaboratively with coworkers and volunteers on implementing new features and web behavior changes.

We'd also need help making our code more maintainable, testable, and mergeable by upstream.
About Berkman:
The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University is a
research program founded to explore cyberspace, share in its study, and
help pioneer its development. Founded in 1997, through a generous gift
from Jack N. and Lillian R. Berkman, the Center is home to an
ever-growing community of faculty, fellows, staff, and affiliates
working on projects that span the broad range of intersections between
cyberspace, technology, and society. More information can be found at
http://cyber.law.harvard.edu.

Commitment to Diversity:
The work and well-being of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at
Harvard University are strengthened profoundly by the diversity of our
network and our differences in background, culture, experience, national
origin, religion, sexual orientation, and much more. We actively seek
and welcome applications from people of color, women, the LGBTQ
community, and persons with disabilities, as well as applications from
researchers and practitioners from across the spectrum of disciplines
and methods. The roots of this deep commitment are many and,
appropriately, diverse. We are not nearly far enough along in this
regard, and we may never be. It is a constant process in which there
remains much to learn. We welcome your inquiries, comments and ideas on
how we may continue to improve.

The Free Software Foundation (FSF), a Massachusetts 501(c)(3) charity with a worldwide mission to protect freedoms critical to the computer-using public, seeks *two* motivated and organized tech-friendly Boston-based individuals to be its full-time campaigns managers.
Together, these positions form a team working closely with the
executive director and members of the FSF's board of directors to
plan, carry out, evaluate, and improve FSF's advocacy and education
campaigns.

The team will start by taking up responsibility for our existing
campaigns in support of the GNU Project, free software adoption, free
media formats, and freedom on the network; and against DRM, software
patents, and proprietary software.

Such responsibility includes:

planning both online and physical actions to achieve our campaign
goals,

setting specific goals for each action and then measuring our
success in achieving them,

doing the writing and messaging work needed to effectively explain
our campaigns and motivate people to support them,

overseeing or doing the graphic design work to make our campaigns
and their Web sites attractive,

working with our systems administrators on the technology choices
and deployments -- especially of web publication systems like
Drupal and Plone -- for our campaign sites, and

being an approachable, humble, and friendly representative of the
FSF to our worldwide community of existing supporters and the
broader public, both in person and online.

The campaigns team is also empowered and encouraged to develop new
campaigns to advance the FSF's charitable mission. If you can look at
http://www.fsf.org/campaigns and come up with proposals to improve
both the quality and appearance of the work described there, along
with ways to measure the success of your proposals if implemented, you
should apply.

In your cover letter, please tell us a story of a time you motivated
and organized others to take action on an issue important to you.

With our small staff of twelve, each person makes a clear
contribution. We work hard, but offer a humane and fun work
environment.

The FSF is a mature but growing organization that provides great
potential for advancement; existing staff get the first chance at any
new job openings.

Benefits and salary

The job must be worked on-site at FSF's downtown Boston offices. An
on-site interview will be required with the executive director.

This job is a union position. The salary is fixed at $56,920/year and
is non-negotiable. Other benefits include:

full family health coverage through Blue Cross/Blue Shield's HMO
Blue program,

subsidized dental plan,

four weeks of paid vacation annually,

seventeen paid holidays annually,

public transit commuting cost reimbursement,

403(b) program through TIAA-CREF, and

yearly cost-of-living pay increases.

Application instructions

Resumes and cover letters must be submitted via email to
hiring@fsf.org. The email must contain the subject line, "Campaigns
Manager." Resumes and cover letters should be attached in a free
format. Email submissions that do not follow these instructions will
be ignored.

Applications must be received by Monday, July 23rd, 2012.

The FSF is an equal opportunity employer and will not discriminate
against any employee or application for employment on the basis of
race, color, marital status, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation,
national origin, handicap, or any other legally protected status
recognized by federal, state or local law.
